Hair Loss Treatments

Hair loss (alopecia) in men and women can have cosmetic and emotional impact on their well being. Fortunately, there are several options available to address this common issue.

For new onset hair loss, especially in women, a medical workup may be indicated. A variety of medical conditions, such as anemia, thyroid disturbance, iron and vitamin D deficiencies and autoimmune diseases can cause hair loss. If there is a medical reason for hair loss, addressing that issue can result in hair restoration.

For those with “pattern” hair loss, for which there is no underlying medical problem, there are several options. In addition to topical minoxidil, available over the counter, our doctors may prescribe medicines that can promote hair growth by addressing hormonal triggers for alopecia.

Nutrafol is a safe and effective supplement that is available in our office. Formulations designed for both male and female types of hair loss combine a variety of natural ingredients that address inflammatory and hormonal triggers for alopecia, as well as nutrients for hair growth.

Protein Rich Plasma

For early onset hair loss in men and women, Protein Rich Plasma treatments, or PRP, are offered at Union Square Dermatology. In the office, a patient’s blood is drawn. The serum is processed in a centrifuge which clears the red blood cells and concentrates fortifying proteins in the remaining liquid, the plasma. This healing fluid is then injected into the areas of hair loss to stimulate hair growth.

The treatment is safe, using the patient’s own plasma for therapeutic benefit. A series of treatments are required. PRP may be employed alongside other treatments for maintenance of hair growth.

In our office, all consultations and treatments are performed by experienced dermatology providers. Their years of training and aesthetic skills combine to achieve consistent natural-appearing results.
