Not all body art stands the test of time. Many people have second thoughts about their tattoos. Fortunately, one doesn’t have to live with a decision forever. Highly precise lasers can dramatically fade most tattoos by focusing light on the pigment, reducing it into tiny particles that are absorbed harmlessly by the body. All this can be accomplished without damaging the surrounding tissue. Results can generally be seen within a few weeks, although larger and darker tattoos may require more treatments than smaller, lighter ones. At Union Square Dermatology, the skin is anesthetized prior to treatment, insuring a nearly pain-free experience. At our office, tattoos are treated with the Medlite C6 laser, a Q-switched Neodymium Yag device that remains state of the art. With technology designed and refined specifically for tattoo removal, the procedure is effective, with very little risk of scarring or discoloration.
Recently a new protocol was developed, known as the R20 Method. Insuring the site remains numb, up to four treatments may be performed on tattoo on the same day. Typically, 20-30 minutes must elapse between each pass to allow swelling to resolve and insure efficacy. With this method, tattoos respond with fewer total office visits. Studies show no greater risk of side effects or scarring with this technique.
